Local Observation Strategy

Bethalto is positioned in a strategic 'Starlight Corridor.' It is far enough from the IL metro glare to allow for deep-sky imaging, yet serves as a convenient staging area for the deeper Class 4 skies found at Houchin's Field.

The Best Times for Stargazing in Bethalto

Observation in Bethalto is most rewarding during the Summer months. During this time, the colder air masses over the Midwest region often result in significantly higher transparency, allowing you to see objects like the Andromeda Galaxy or Orion Nebula with much more definition.

Expert Tips for Bethalto Observers

Thermal equilibrium is key. Since Bethalto temperatures can shift rapidly after sunset, allow your telescope mirrors at least 45 minutes to 'cool down' before attempting high-magnification work at McDonnell Planetarium - Forest Park. This prevents 'tube currents' from blurring your view of Jupiter or Saturn. Scientific Context: While local conditions vary, the instrumented reading of Bortle 4 at Houchin's Field (244.9 miles away) remains the benchmark for regional sky quality.

Regional Perspective: If you're traveling from Godfrey, the 9.9-mile trip to Bethalto is a justified detour for anyone seeking slightly clearer atmospheric 'seeing'.

Great rift visible, Saggitarius cloud not easily visible, Scutum cloud not visible. Milky Way about 10-12 degrees wide, but faint and no fine details. To the NW a blue white light dome easily seen. Due East is the Clarksville lightdome almost 25 degrees high and 15 degrees wide. Core is bright. Adjacent to the light dome is a spotlight (which we determined was coming from the cemetary here in FODO park).
