The Darkest Skies
in Ohio

"No clouds, but high moisture in atmosphere is creating poor transparency. Stars are soft, with a ring of moisture visible around bright stars. High airglow apparent. Milky Way just visible, no detials apparent. Travese City light dome dominates the eastern horizon. Reflection of Travese City dome is visible on Glen Lake, further impacting dark adaptation in that direction. Transparency improved over the night, with the best conditions at the end of data collection. Bortle Class would be better under better atmospheric conditions."

"Exceptionally clear skies and air for this eastern US site. Very dry air with some moderate winds provided visibility of 50-75+ miles during the day. At night the horizon is almost completely illuminated by cities, small towns and rural farms and ranches. Some very bright direct glare sources in the cities of Harrisonburg and Fishersville (Hospital?). The Milky Way was visible to the horizon in the SW and obscured at about 25 degrees above horizon in the NE. Very good detail in Cygnus near the zenith. Washington D.C. light dome easily visible to the ENE. With some lengthy dark adaptation, this observer was able to see 6.7 magnitude star in Pegasus."

"Site 300 meters south of Big Meadows gas pump and Wayside café, seeing good, transparency good, but windy and getting hazier. Light dome from Washington D.C. brightest, many smaller ones around the horizon. Milky Way easy to see especially brightest parts in Cygnus and Cassiopeia. As night progresses, however, haziness increases and contrast decreases, especially along the southwestern horizon. SQM 21.27. Glare from several lights at Wayside and visitor center very distracting, kills night vision, illuminates landscape, much brighter than Venus from this location. By 4th set low clouds move in from the northwest and very hazy and windy."

"Site on pullout of Skyline Drive, south sky pretty well blocked by hillside. Seeing good, transparency excellent. Bright light domes from D.C. and Front Royal dominate the north and northeast, but zenith is remarkably dark, revealing the brighter parts of the Milky Way easily. Gradient from horizon to zenith however. Milky Way invisible in dim areas like Monoceros and Gemini. Airglow appears brighter than normal because of high gradient from zenith, even toward the west where there are no bright light domes. Lots of bright glare from Front Royal, Winchester, core of D.C. light dome very bright, damages night vision, 20 degrees wide. SQM 21.33 late. NELM measured by Duriscoe but with spectacles, no contacts, in fatigued state, in Triangulum."

"A very windy night with strong gusts. FWHM definitely affected, probably by vibrations of the observation tower itself. Light polltion sources visible both in foreground and at horizon. A thin layer of haze evident to east, possibly part of approaching clouds. First data set virtually cloud free. Sky free of contrails. Limiting magnitude found in Pegasus. Andromeda galaxy visible, M15 requires much effort. Milky Way detail easily detectable near zenith. Sky appeared noticeably brighter than previous nights, possibly due to some airglow. I also think it may have to do with the atmospheric clarity. All other nights contained some amount of possible light absorbing clouds. The second set of images from this night do contain some clouds, but the first set is clear."

"A very calm, humid and clear night. Dewfall occurred during data collection, however dew heater prevented lens fog. Multiple light domes evident from site, as well as a continuous glow along horizon in all directions. Airglow was present. Andromeda galaxy easily visible, Beehive (Pegasus) visible with medium effort. Prominent dust lanes in Milky Way visible at zenith, but not below ~50 degrees. Limiting magnitude found in Pegasus."

"This was a very clear night. High humidity. Trees covered all of horizon from this site, but light scatter was evident to the north and west especially. LZM found in Pegasus. Moderate Milky Way detail was visible. M31 easily visible, M33 a difficult averted vision object. Airglow likely strong."

"Set up on dirt road near canons at Murphy-Chambers Farm. Sky is cloud free at start of data collection with some low clouds along the horizon appearing later in the evening. Very nice location for night sky viewing, as this site is blocked from all direct glare sources. Milky Way is washed out in the lower sky from skyglow. Charles Town is easily visible to the west, the metro areas of Baltimore and D.C. have a light dome up to 30 degrees. For the most part, this area is surrounded by very bright skyglow along the horizon, though the natural terrain produces shielding that allows for comparatively good viewing. An SQM reading of 20.39 around midnight."

"Set up camera in field at Caboose Farm about 200 yds SW of Camp Round Meadow. Numerous direct glare sources from local farms and a building at Camp Round Meadow. A few clouds around the horizon to start but skies cleared completely by third set. Very high humidity along with warm temps causing high extinction. Sky glow from Frederick easily visible, as is the greater Baltimore-D.C. area. Milky Way is barely visible and most deep sky objects not visible. Decent view of most standard constellations and the night sky is still markedly better than from within Frederick or other comparable cities."

"Set up about 50' from the water in a depression in the sand dunes. Local glare from the western most home in the "1933 Century of Progress" homes. Other glare sources from the power plants to the SW and NE along the lakeshore are easily visible but did not saturate the camera sensor. A clear view across Lake Michigan to the Chicago skyline, though clouds and haze never completely cleared away. I suspect the industrial developments from the Port of Indiana all the way around to Chicago has a significant impact on aeresols and local cloud development. Even so, at 35 miles distant, the illuminated buildings of the Chicago skyline were easily visible to the naked eye on this evening. The light dome of Michigan City (5 miles to the ENE) was very bright, but the dome from Chicago all the way to south of INDU is by far the greatest source of skyglow. The Milky Way was visible from 15° above the horizon at both ends. Not a lot of detail was visible in the Sagittarius or Cygnus star clouds. M31 was barely visible to the naked eye without using averted vision. Comparitively, for the region, this is not too bad a place to view the night sky. If not for the local glare sources, it would be fairly quick to dark adapt and be able to see many celestial features. Was able to see 6.2 LM in Ursa Major (which was over the lake to the darker north)."
